Increased Market Needs
By 2018, Sea Life Aquaculture experienced a significant surge in demand, with monthly oyster orders rising from 4,000 to 15,000 pieces. This rapid increase was driven by the growing popularity of fresh oysters among restaurants, hotels, and seafood retailers.
However, the company soon faced a major challenge: wild oyster supply shortages. The natural oyster population from Pulau Jemur, Pulau Terkukur, Pulau Besar, and Pulau Angsa was unable to meet the rising demand, as wild harvesting had its limitations due to seasonal fluctuations, environmental factors, and sustainability concerns.
Strategic Collaboration for Sustainable Supply
To address this shortage, Sea Life Aquaculture formed a strategic partnership with oyster farmers in Setiu, Terengganu. Setiu was known for its well-managed oyster farms, making it an ideal location to source a consistent supply of high-quality oysters.
- – The collaboration ensured a stable and scalable oyster supply, reducing dependency on wild harvesting.
- – Working with experienced oyster farmers in Setiu allowed for better quality control and predictable production cycles.
- – This shift also supported sustainable aquaculture practices, aligning with the company’s long-term vision.
Logistics Setup: Strengthening the Supply Chain
With the new supply source in place, Sea Life Aquaculture needed an efficient logistics system to transport oysters from Setiu, Terengganu, to Klang, Selangor. This was a critical step to maintain freshness and quality during transit.
Key Logistics Enhancements:
-
Establishing a Dedicated Transport Route
- – Designed a transport system to move 4,000 oysters per trip from Setiu to Klang.
- – Ensured a consistent supply chain to meet customer demand without delays.
-
Cold Chain Management
- – Used temperature-controlled transport with polystyrene boxes packed with ice to maintain oyster freshness.
- – Implemented real-time tracking to monitor delivery efficiency and prevent spoilage.
-
Efficient Distribution Network
- – Oysters were immediately processed, cleaned, and depurated upon arrival in Klang before being delivered to customers.
- – Reduced delivery turnaround time, ensuring fresh, high-quality oysters reached clients within 24 hours.
By partnering with Setiu farmers and optimizing transportation, Sea Life Aquaculture successfully scaled operations while maintaining product quality. This marked a turning point, allowing the company to transition from a wild harvest-dependent model to a more sustainable and commercial farming approach.
