In 2024, Sea Life Aquaculture embarked on its most ambitious expansion to date, the establishment of a state-of-the-art mollusc hatchery in Tawau, Sabah. This facility is designed to significantly increase the production capacity of triploid oyster spat, abalone, and other mollusc seeds, reinforcing the company’s role as a leader in sustainable aquaculture in Malaysia.

Key Developments in Hatchery Expansion:

1. Strategic Expansion to Tawau, Sabah
  • – Tawau was chosen due to its ideal coastal conditions, clean seawater, and existing aquaculture ecosystem, which supports large-scale mollusc seed production.
  • – The new hatchery will ensure a consistent supply of high-quality triploid oyster spat and abalone seed, meeting growing industry demand.
  • – This move aligns with Sea Life Aquaculture’s long-term vision of strengthening regional and international mollusc farming supply chains.
2. Multi-Species Hatchery for Diverse Aquaculture Needs
  • – Unlike previous hatchery setups, this facility will not only focus on triploid oysters but also expand into abalone and other mollusc seed production.
  • – By diversifying production, the hatchery will support various aquaculture industries, providing reliable seed stock for both small-scale and commercial farmers.
  •
3. Groundwork & Construction Phase
  • – Earthwork began in September 2024, marking the official start of the project.
  • – The hatchery is being developed at P2631 Kg. Hj Matahir Laut, Peti Surat 1145, 91036 Tawau, Sabah, Malaysia.
  • – The construction plan includes:
Spawning and larval rearing facilities for triploid oyster spat and abalone.
Microalgae culture lab to ensure a sustainable food source for larvae.
Seawater filtration and treatment systems for optimal hatchery conditions.
Nursery and grow-out areas for strengthening juvenile molluscs before distribution.
